Human Factors in Alarm & Annunciator Systems

Process alarms are a vital source of information for operators in many settings.  Both conventional and Video Display Unit (VDU)-based annunciator and alarm systems at use in many control rooms have not been designed in accordance with accepted human factors principles and guidelines.  This two-day course covers near-term enhancements as well as human factors guidelines and options useful for system replacement.  Design features of visual, auditory, and control elements are discussed.  Advanced alarm systems, having expanded alarms processing capabilities, are also considered.

Benefits:

·          Identify needed alarms and annunciator features

·          Learn methods for evaluating and enhancing annunciators and alarm systems

·          Identify human factors standards useful for incorporating into design specifications

·          Develop approaches to ensure that alarm upgrade is consistent with human factors guidance
